READ: Welcome
Welcome to Avo!
Avo is the word for cloth in Fongbe, pronounced, AV-AU. Fongbe is the language predominantly spoken in southern Benin.
It has been normalized to see indigenous African women as needy of western sanitary products. I bet if you were traveling to Africa you would think it logical and appropriate to bring pads and other sanitary products for women and girls who are unable to afford it.
This course teaches a way indigenous women and girls use cloth for pads which are healthier than western disposable products.
But this course is a not just about cloth pads it is about
- recognizing sovereignty,
- letting go of capitalist mindset + judgement,
- reclaiming feeling empowered and able without western goods,
- embracing indigenous solutions to the side effects of western sanitary products.
And most of all it is about taking time to honor the sacred ritual your body does for you and your lineage.
So, take your time, be patient with yourself, have grace as you learn to implement this ancestral practice.
